Explanation of sharping knife & scraping reed
If the knife is good state, your technique will advance
The sharpening knife is difficult. but if you don't use a very sharp knife, you will not be able to make reeds yourself. Generally, for making a reed, you need 2 sharpening.
Step 1:Sharpening whetstone & knife
Have you sharpened a whetstone ?
- If your finishing whetstone and a middle whetstone is not flat perfectly, you should sharpen them.
Like a picture of right side, you put a sandpaper (no.100) a brick made with concrete and sharpen the whetstone.

- You steeped a finishing whetstone and a middle whetstone in water for 30 minutes.
- First, you prepare a middle whetstone.

You can sharpen the edge og surface. The part of knife with left hand is sharpened.
Little by little, you change the part to put left hand.
Always only when you put the knife, you should increase your weight.
When you finish sharpening all of the edge, you change the middle whetstone to the finishing whetstone.
Step 2: Finish sharping knife
Be careful with The edge of the knife is not nicked.
- You sharpen the edge of reverse lightly. and sharpen the edge of surface lightly. This progress is reperated for 3 times.

- That' all. About the knife to scrape rough, you don't need this last progress.

Step 3:Steep reed
Too much scraping is very big problem
First, You should steep your reed. Because you scrape the tip.
Basically, the scrape is maked the surface smooth with a little taper. The most thinnest part is the tip and the most thickest part is the back. The back is almost same thicknes to the basic thicknes of the center.
After scraping, you should adjust you reed. If the reed don't have enough thickness for the adjustment, you can't use the reed.
Too much scraping is very big problem. Attention please.
Step 4:Scraping reed
Do not put the reed, or the reed will be broken
- Plark(tongue) is inserted between the blades.
If you put the reed, reed will be broken. I always use a dial indicator this progress. The tip should have the flat thickness. I think that the basic thickness of the tip is 0.1mm. For Loree, marigaux oboe, more thinner thickness is good.
If you cut last total length + 0.5mm, you make the tip 0.5mm long.

- After that, you scrape all of the scrape(lay) without the tip. You scrape as long as possible.
Long stroke is good. This way can make smooth surface.
You should not make a step between the part of the material and the bark.

Step 5:Cutting edge of tips
For keeps the condition of the tip
The edge of the tips is cut a litle. This keeps the condition of the tip. Very a little cutting is good.
The reed of this picture is french style. It has V style back.
The subject of next time lesson is the adjustment of the reed.
